Watchmen DC: Better?

August 11, 2009 by Dan Leave a Comment

In a word: yes. But I’m still not really a fan. While it’s nice to have the original Night Owl’s death reinstated, and more Rorschach is never a bad thing, the director’s cut doesn’t alter any of the things that I found problematic with the original release.
Worse, the additions actually make the film even longer, and at times it really does drag. As a piece of entertainment is still doesn’t do a good job. As an adaptation it’s equal parts admirable and blasphemous.
I would go so far as to say I enjoyed this viewing more than the first though. Spotting the new bits was fun, and I still marvel at Jackie Earle Haley’s performance; he completely nails Rorschach in as much as the script will allow, and every time he’s on screen you pay attention. I’m really quite excited to see his take on Freddy Kruger.
So: the director’s cut probably won’t make you a fan if you weren’t already, but it does make for a more complete experience and resolve a handful of the shorter cut’s problems.
